Chains – Composition and Uses

Chains can be classified on the basis of their composition, design as well as their usage.

Classified according to material:

The most common metals used for making chains to be used in industrial applications are stainless steel and zinc plated steel. Where aesthetics is essential, the higher cost of stainless steel needs to be borne. But the cost is justified since stainless steel chains are strong, corrosion resistant and are excellent for marine applications and for outdoor use in rough weather. The dimensions of the chain links would matter too, as the tooling cost for larger items may be formidable.

On the other hand, zinc plated steel is quite durable and reasonably corrosion resistant. They can be quite cost effective when compared to stainless steel and pretty versatile in their own right. Brass chains are quite popular for non-industrial usage such as in homes and for jewellery making. In fact precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum are used in a variety of weldless models in jewellery. Heavy duty brass chains are used to hang chandeliers, potted plants, etc. in homes.

Plastic is mainly used as barrier chains where their distinct colour comes in very handy for protection, crowd control, making queuing spaces, etc.

Classified according to design and usage:

Block chains and Roller chains:

Block chains are used in conveyor belts and consist of blocks connected with side plates or pins. These chains are used in conjunction with sprocket wheels. Roller chains are a developed version of block chains made with short cylindrical rollers bound together by side links. Roller chains are used in many types of industrial, domestic and agricultural machines to transmit power. Bicycle chains are roller chains.

Binder chains:

Binder chains are simply high strength and versatile chains used to bind loads securely for transportation. The binder chains available at Baron Hardware come with clevis/eye grab hooks on both ends.
